How My Father Shaped My Journey in Music: Engr. Obinna Okpaleze (Obiroyce) Pays Tribute to His Father, Mr. Theophilus Okpaleze
Engr. Obinna Okpaleze, CEO of Obiroyce Studios, took to his social media page to express deep gratitude to the man who inspired his life's work.
“I was never self-made. Every success I've achieved and every sound I've shaped has roots in one man — my father, Mr. Theophilus Okpaleze, a legendary sound engineer known to many as Papa Newlife Studio.
He is the genius behind countless classic highlife and gospel songs that defined an era. In fact, over 90% of the popular Ghanaian highlife songs produced in Nigeria were recorded by him. His remarkable career saw him work with music legends such as Chief Osita Osadebe, Chief Akunwata Ozoemena Nsugbe, Chief Morocco Maduka, Prince Nico Mbarga, Prince Gozie Okeke, Mazeli Ikem, Boy O Boy Onwuatu, Ify Orajekwe, Chris Orajekwe, and the Grace Band of Grace of God Mission, among others.
Growing up around sound and music production was inevitable for me. Yet, my father made sure I stayed grounded—he wouldn't let me get too carried away until I completed my secondary education at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, in 2003. With his encouragement, I began my own journey in 2004 and later gained admission into UNN in 2005 to study Pure and Industrial Chemistry.
Even while in school, music never left me. Some of my classmates didn't take me seriously because I always had one foot in the studio, but I already knew where my path was leading.
I must say it again — I am not self-made. God made me, continues to mold me, and used my father as the foundation of everything I have become in the music industry.
As I celebrate 21 years of an amazing journey in music this Sunday, I also celebrate the man who shaped me, taught me, and still corrects me when my ears grow weary.
I celebrate you, Nnam Ukwu. May the rest of your years be filled with peace, health, and endless joy.”
