Onitsha music, popularly called “Onicha music” by the Igbo people, is a unique subgenre of Igbo highlife music that originated in Onitsha, Anambra State, historically known as Onicha-Ado.
The genre is characterized by the use of indigenous instruments such as the Udu, Igba (traditional drums), and occasionally the Ekwe (wooden slit drum), which give the music its distinctive rhythm and cultural identity.
Among the pioneers who laid the foundation for this genre are Ududo Nnobi, the late Igwegwu Afam Ogbuotobo, Tony Odika Azokwu, and several other legendary musicians whose contributions helped shape the sound and preserve the rich musical heritage of Onitsha.
Today, notable artistes such as Ikem Mazeli, Abuchi Obosi, Aniweta Mazeli, and many others continue to promote and sustain Onitsha music, ensuring that it remains vibrant and respected among the various genres of Igbo music.
Onitsha music is more than entertainment—it is a celebration of Igbo culture, tradition, and identity passed down from one generation to another.
