Nyesom Wike: I’ll Testify Only If Court Summons Me in Nnamdi Kanu Case

Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), , has broken his silence following reports that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of (), listed him as one of the witnesses in his ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Wike, speaking to journalists on Thursday, expressed shock at the development, clarifying that he was never contacted by Kanu or his legal team. He described the as “unexpected” and “strange,” insisting that his name appeared on the list without his knowledge or consent.

Wike: “Nobody Has Served Me Any Process

Addressing the matter directly, Wike firmly stated that no official communication or court order has been served to him regarding his alleged inclusion as a witness.

You don't become a witness by reading the newspaper. Nobody has served me any process; nobody has subpoenaed me,” Wike said.
So, because I saw Wike listed, I will not begin to run helter-skelter. No, you don't do that. If I am served, if I am subpoenaed to come and give a witness or give evidence, I must obey the court; I must appear.

He reiterated that he has always respected the rule of law and will comply with any official summons from the court if the need arises. However, he emphasized that until he receives a formal subpoena, he has no obligation to respond to media reports or online speculation.

Ask Nnamdi Kanu Why He Listed Me

When asked if he had any idea why Nnamdi Kanu decided to include him as part of his defence team's witnesses, Wike made it clear that only Kanu could answer that question.

If you see Nnamdi Kanu, you ask him, ‘Why did you list me? I did not go and say I want to be a witness.' So, if you see him, ask him, ‘Why did you list Wike as one of your witnesses?'” he told reporters.

The minister maintained that he has had no recent communication or contact with the detained IPOB leader, adding that his surprise reflects how “unusual” the entire situation is.

Background to the Trial

The latest development follows a dramatic turn in Kanu's trial earlier this week when he dismissed his team of lawyers and announced that he would represent himself in court. During that session, he reportedly submitted a list of over 20 witnesses he intends to call in his defence — a list that allegedly included several public figures, with Wike's name among them.

Legal analysts believe Wike's inclusion could be connected to his past handling of IPOB-related activities during his tenure as Rivers State Governor, especially following the 2020 Oyigbo unrest, when he was accused of using excessive force against suspected IPOB members — a claim he has repeatedly denied.

Public Reaction and Legal Implications

Wike's reaction has triggered widespread discussion on social media and within political circles. While some Nigerians view his calm response as a show of confidence in the legal process, interpret it as a subtle expression of frustration at being dragged into a politically charged case without prior notice.

Legal experts, meanwhile, have clarified that being listed as a witness does not automatically compel appearance until the court issues a subpoena — a formal order requiring testimony or evidence.

If formally summoned, Wike will be legally bound to appear before the Federal High Court to give his testimony. Until then, his involvement remains speculative.

What Lies Ahead

With Nnamdi Kanu now representing himself, the next phase of the trial is expected to focus on witness verification and testimony scheduling. Observers believe the case could take a more politically sensitive turn if figures like Wike are officially drawn into the proceedings.

For now, the FCT Minister insists he remains unbothered, committed to his official duties, and guided by respect for judicial authority.
