Abuja, Nigeria – October 16, 2025:
A medical panel set up by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed that detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is medically fit to continue facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The panel's report, submitted to the court earlier this week, concluded that Kanu's current health condition does not prevent him from participating in his ongoing legal proceedings. Justice James Omotosho, who presides over the case, acknowledged receipt of the report and adopted its findings without objection from either party.
Court Schedules Six Days for Defence Hearing

Following the report, Justice Omotosho has scheduled six consecutive hearing days starting from October 23 for the defence to present its case. Before then, the court granted permission for Kanu to meet privately with his legal team on October 22, under the supervision of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The prosecution, led by the Federal Government, submitted its own assessment on October 13, with no opposition filed by Kanu's lawyers.
Panel's Findings on Health Status
According to the NMA's evaluation, Nnamdi Kanu's health remains “stable and manageable” within his detention facility. The panel emphasized that while he requires continuous monitoring, there is no medical reason to halt the legal process.
Justice Omotosho accepted the findings and directed that DSS continue to provide adequate medical supervision throughout the trial.
Next Steps in the Trial
With this ruling, the case now moves into the defence phase. Legal analysts expect the upcoming hearings to focus on both procedural fairness and the admissibility of previous evidence.
Kanu continues to face terrorism-related charges which he has consistently denied. His legal representatives maintain that his detention violates his fundamental rights, a claim that remains under review by the court.
