The term “Egwu Awantilo” emerged in 2023 during an interview with Chief Dr Ozor Nwa Mgbakwu Abo. He coined it to mock hip-hop, Afro music, Highlife, and other genres.
Even now, Ozor Nwa Mgbakwu Abo is the primary authority on the meaning of “Egwu Awantilo.”
Essentially, “Egwu Awantilo” is used by Egwu Ekpili artists to mock other music genres, asserting their own superiority and becoming a source of pride for practitioners.
Interestingly, some modern Egwu Ekpili enthusiasts are contemplating a shift from “Egwu Ekpili” to “Egwu Awantilo,” finding it a more captivating name.
